Patient and public involvement@UCLH
Claire Willis the new Patient & Public Involvement Facilitator at UCLH is responsible for ensuring that the patient’s voice is heard and integrated into our work, service design and delivery, and on quality improvement. The Trust needs to hear what
you, as members of the public want from your health services and as patients, what you think of the services at UCLH and how you want them to be improved.
How you can get involved...
There ARE a number of different ways to get involved.
Here are some examples from the last year: -
Training – It’s important for staff to understand what it is like to be on the receiving end of carel. Patients have told us their stories about experience through video, which has then been included in leadership training for staff.
Focus Groups – Women who gave birth at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital were invited to discuss their experiences and identify areas for service improvement. These were then discussed with senior management who took action on the main themes that were identified.
Quality Improvement – Nurses worked with older adults to explore their experience of dignity in care using the creative arts. Participants were invited to make use of collage, movement/dance and sculpting with clay. The nurses and patients were able to learn and reflect together. One of the participants commented “… it’s a partnership, being given a voice, listened to, and people are prepared to learn”. There are always new and interesting opportunities to get involved in.
If you want to participate email claire.willis@uclh.nhs.uk for an application form and tell us what interests you.

Your Governing Body
The Governing Body is composed of 33 people, 23 of whom are elected by the Trust's patient, public and staff members. Three governors’ represent the local public, 14 our patients and six our staff . 10 other governors are appointed by local partner organisations including the PCT and University.
Elections to the Governing Body are held each year.
What has the Governing Body achieved so far?
Almost at it’s fifth year, Governors have been actively involved in helping the trust develop and shape the services we offer at UCLH, they are working to improve communication between the Trust's members, patients and local communities and are influencing the decisions we take.
Over the last 18 months the Governing Body has:
- Carried out an interview based project to look at improving the surgical patient pathway.
- Campaigning for better disabled parking and drop off facilities which is likely to lead to an increase in the overall number available to patients.
- Engaged in activities which focused on quality providing valuable feedback as participants in, for example, Patient Environment Action Team (PEAT) inspections and the nursing essence of care benchmarking programme.
- Attended workshops on the national in-patient survey
- Assisted in the production of the new patient information leaflets
- Contributed to a meeting of dignity champions within the Trust
- Appointed Non-Executive Directors to the Board.
- Increased their engagement with members offering members a number of opportunities to meet and discuss issues with them for example at MembersMeets.
- Shared their patient experience with student nurses.
