RLHIM Integrated Children and Adolescent Service

23/06/2020 00:00

The Integrated Children and Adolescent Service is a long-established outpatient service of the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine at UCLH.

The service offers a patient-centred holistic approach, to safely and appropriately integrate complementary care alongside conventional treatments for children and young people up to 18 years old with a variety of conditions.

Services offered may include general advice about complementary therapies, symptom management, relaxation techniques and acupuncture, as well as wellbeing and lifestyle advice.

The complementary services offered have an excellent safety profile. The team is led by a Consultant Paediatrician and all doctors have undertaken additional training in complementary therapies.

Acupuncture treatment is only available for children aged 12 years and over with chronic tension-type headache and migraine, providing the referral meets the NICE CG150 guidance criteria, and following an initial clinical assessment by the team for suitability.

NICE guidance recommends that a course of prophylactic acupuncture can be considered for Chronic Tension-Type Headache, and for Migraine with or without aura, if both topiramate and propranolol are unsuitable or ineffective, and according to the person’s preference, comorbidities and risk of adverse events.

New patient and follow-up appointments are currently being delivered remotely, but clinics are normally held in the Children’s Outpatients, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wing, Grafton Way.

To make a referral, the service is now found in a new eRS location:

Specialty: Complementary Medicine

Clinic Type: General Medicine

Service results: Integrated Medicine Children & Adolescent - RLHIM - UCLH - RRV

Referrals are accepted from NHS GPs, Consultant Paediatricians and other Consultant specialists.

The clinic does not offer investigations and diagnosis, so children need to be referred to an appropriate paediatric or adolescent clinic first if these are required.

Children with serious, complex or chronic medical conditions must be under a lead paediatrician or specialist care elsewhere, in addition to this service. In most other situations the child or young person should be under local paediatric or adolescent services. The team works collaboratively with professionals involved in the child or young person’s care.

Service information can be found on our patient information leaflet downloadable here.
