Haematology team embracing technology with new podcasts

21/06/2019 00:00
A team of haematology specialists has come up with an innovative way to spread the news about recent technological advancements in care to busy staff.

Sonia Thomas, ward sister T16 North, Sarah Jordan, ward sister T16 South and Gavin Cooper, senior clinical practice facilitator, have set up a podcast – an audio recording available to download from the internet.

The team has started a series of podcasts made for nurses, junior doctors and allied healthcare professionals.

The podcasts have been shortlisted for the Technology and Data in Nursing category for the Nursing Times Awards 2019.

There are now seven episodes, covering CAR T cell therapy, cancer clinical trials, lymphoma, acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), thalassaemia, thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura (TTP) and cancer cell biology.

Called Bolus: education delivered stat, the podcasts are 20 to 30 minutes long and feature short, informative interviews with healthcare experts.

They are available to download from Apple, Soundcloud, Spotify and Sticher.

The team said: “Podcasts have seen a surge in popularity over the past few years and are a quick and effective way to tell a story, educate and get information across.

“Our nurses and doctors have said how engaging they found the podcast and how much they like learning in this way.

“They can access it whenever they want, choose the subject matter that interest them and listen back at a later point to refresh their knowledge.”

There are now plans for the podcasts to expand into other specialities and focus on the wider nursing issues, including staff resilience and the rise of nurse led services within the NHS.
