Nick Clegg and Miriam Gonzalez Durantez spoke for the first time about their son’s diagnosis of blood cancer today.

Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine show, they told how their eldest son Antonio, now 15, was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma last year, after finding a small, painless lump in his neck.

An ultrasound scan and biopsy revealed stage 2 lymphoma, and Antonio was treated with four monthly cycles of chemotherapy, a course of heavy steroids, and a barrage of medication. The couple were speaking ahead of tonight’s launch of a major report by blood cancer research charity Bloodwise, entitled Childhood blood cancer; the quest for a kinder cure

Speaking about their son’s care, the couple said, “The treatment he received in the NHS at the teenage cancer unit at UCLH was superb. Every single person working on the ward – from the reception desk to the expert nurses – was friendly, professional and compassionate.”

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) is a specialist centre for the treatment of cancer in teenagers and young adults. Victoria Grandage, our teenage and young adult cancer clinical lead and consultant adolescent haematologist said:

“Patients of Antonio’s age with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma are usually treated on our teenage and young adult (TYA) day care unit. Adolescence is a time of great change both physically and psychologically and we recognise that a cancer diagnosis at this time comes with particular challenges. At UCLH, patients are cared for by a team of highly skilled staff who are experts in delivering excellent clinical care in an age appropriate environment. We are very glad Antonio has made a recovery and wish him well for the future”.
