New MRI installed

Weighing 13 tonnes, the new MRI has been safely installed at the new Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals, which opens in October 2019

As it is situated in basement -2 of the building, navigating the massive piece of equipment through the almost complete hospital was a feat of engineering.

John Clucas explained: “The MRI went through a hatch which had been kept open throughout the construction. We waited until this point in the build process to make sure we have the most up-to-date equipment, but also to ensure that once it is installed, it is in a safe and weather proof environment.”

The MRI was delivered early on Saturday morning and the mechanically assisted transfer took place over the weekend and involved around 30 people carefully lowering it into position.

When the new facility opens, the MRI will be used by radiographers and radiologists to image a range of patients, including those with head and neck, ear nose and throat and dental conditions. The MRI scanner is a Siemens 3T state-of-the-art magnet offering highly detailed imaging in an outpatient setting, enabling more patients to have their MRI at UCLH, improving their diagnostic experience.

Being in the new Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals will mean that clinical teams are co-located, enabling the creation of more one-stop clinics and integrated care for patients.

Dr Susan Jawad, clinical lead for MRI, said: “We are really thrilled to have this powerful MRI scanner installed at the Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals. It means we will have the best technology for clinical imaging. Together with close working with our colleagues in the multi-disciplinary teams on site will help us improve patients’ experiences and outcomes."
