Service for young people recognised with national award

The Lighthouse, a pioneering £8m centre which offers hope and support to children and young people who have experienced the trauma of sexual abuse, has won a national award.

The UCLH-led facility – the first of its kind in the UK – won the transformation award at the Guardian Public Service Awards 2019. The winners were announced last night.

Emma Harewood, Lighthouse delivery and service manager, said: "It is fantastic for our service to be recognised in the Transformation category, as we believe we are transforming the experience of children and their families after reporting sexual abuse.

"As awareness of the centre is increasing, we are seeing three times more children being referred to us.

"The children tell us they are seen and listened to, and made to feel comfortable at the Lighthouse."

The Lighthouse puts the child at the centre of care to make sure they have a safe place to recover and can access all the help they need under one roof. Police and psychologists can interview and care for victims in one place so investigations can be pursued alongside healthcare, counselling and support.

Support is offered by consultant paediatricians, nurses, play specialists, therapists, advocates, police and social care professionals.

UCLH works in partnership with The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, the NSPCC, Solace Women’s Aid, Camden Council and Metropolitan Police.

The Lighthouse is also among the finalists for the Children and Young People Now Awards, which celebrates innovation and impact across the sector. The winners will be announced on 28 November.
