UCLH staff celebrated for excellence

Staff from across UCLH were honoured for their outstanding work on Wednesday night at the Celebrating Excellence Awards.

Hosted by actress Barbara Windsor MBE, the awards recognised staff working in many different roles. Almost 1,300 nominations were submitted to the awards this year, 30 per cent more than last year.

Introducing the awards, UCLH chairman Richard Murley described the ceremony as “the standout moment in the UCLH year”. He said: “It is with pride tonight that we recognise the great work of all of our finalists – individuals and teams who go above and beyond for their patients and their colleagues.”

Barbara Windsor told the packed hall: “Working in an NHS hospital on a Saturday night – that’s hard work. You all make it seem like it’s not hard work, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

All the finalists demonstrated the UCLH values of kindness, safety, improving and teamwork. UCLH’s former head of radiotherapy services, Julia Solano, received the chairman’s Achievement Awards for her outstanding contribution over 40 years, including her work to bring proton beam therapy (PBT) to UCLH. On Wednesday the Department of Health gave the green light for work to begin in earnest on UCLH’s PBT centre, due to open to patients in 2018.

UCLH's workforce director Ben Morrin said: “It was a great night, and summed up by Julia’s words at the end of the evening when she applauded the exceptional commitment she had seen in our staff’s values throughout her career here. I want to see us capture the sense of celebration we saw tonight and bring that even more into to our day-to-day work - we’ll be looking at ways to do that in the coming weeks.

“It only remains to thank the fantastic team who made the night such a success, the UCLH Charity - for affording it - the workforce team, our governors, and everyone who was nominated."
