About The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN). 


The NHNN is a leading centre for the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients with a wide range of neurological conditions such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, stroke and head injuries. With its neighbour, the Institute of Neurology, it is a major international centre for research and training. The NHNN provides comprehensive neurology and neurosurgery services for our other hospitals, including an acute brain injury unit, the national prion clinic and a neurorehabilitation unit.

The National Hospital Development Foundation (NHDF), is the charity dedicated to raising funds for The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and has raised more than £15 million over the last ten years for cutting edge equipment, buildings and research.

Private Patients

Inpatient facilities are provided on Nuffield ward which is situated in the main hospital block at NHNN and has 19 beds.  

In addition, private patients can be seen in our specialist Epilepsy Telemetry Unit, The Neurorehabilitation Unit and Pain Management Unit.

Nuffield ward is in close proximity to theatres, intensive care and the on-call medical, surgical and anaesthetic teams. Patients therefore benefit from both the advantages of private care, and the reassurance and safety provided by full back-services.

Private patients are under the direct care of consultants based at the NHNN.

Outpatients

The Outpatients at The National Hospital is the largest Neurological Outpatients in the country.

There are in total approximately 150 Dr’s, Consultants, Honorary Consultants & Professors employed at the National Hospital. There are 21 Nurse Specialists in post and two Nurse Consultants.

Approximately 54,000 Neurological & Neurosurgical patients are seen each year. Only 5,000 patients are admitted to the Hospital so the OPD see over 10 times that amount.

Up to 50 clinics are run each day; these clinics are based in 4 different areas. The location of a specific clinic can be found on the appointment letter.

The Basil Samuels Outpatients. Based in the main hospital. The department is situated in Chandler Wing ground floor

Bereavement Service for Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SITU)

This service is provided for those who have had a relative pass away on the Surgical ITU.
