Professional background

Simona Di Caro joined the Nutrition and Intestinal Failure team as a Consultant Gastroenterology in December 2013. She has an expertise in Nutrition, Intestinal Failure (i.e Short Bowel Syndrome), Gastrointestinal Consequences of Cancer and its Treatment (i.e. Radiation Enteropathy), Inflammatory Bowel Disease. She also sees patients with general gastroenterology problems and runs target/cancer clinics. She has an interest in Endoscopy mainly lower gastrointestinal tract.

She trained as an MD at the Catholic University of Rome, Italy where she also completed her Gastroenterology training. As a SpR she was the coordinator of the European multicentre study for Double Balloon Enteroscopy. She then was a post-doctoral fellow for 2 years at UPMC, Pittsburgh, USA where she was awarded the HFSP fellowship and worked on identification of new target genes for diagnosis/treatment of colorectal and gastric cancer using DNA Microarray Analysis. She completed her PhD in Nutrition at the University of Tor Vergata, Rome, Italy. She was previously the Senior Clinical Fellow in Inflammatory Bowel Disease at UCLH where she was awarded the UCLH Fast Track Grant for her research. She has a particular interest in research and is a Honorary Senior Lecturer at UCL. She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate. She is actively involved in teaching and organising the MSC students in Clinical and Public Health Nutrition at UCL and the UCLP Nutrition course.
