Professional background

Clinical: Consultant in Critical Care and Anaesthesia, with experience in general, emergency and tropical medicine.

Research methods and governance: Completed a Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellowship, and previously an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Anaesthesia and Critical care with a strong methodological background in biostatistics, epidemiology, and clinical trials.

Teaching: Masters level teaching and supervision in Public Health; co-founder of anaesthetics and intensive care training courses

Management: A proven track record (Chief Investigator) in delivering multi-centre studies in the NHS, and familiar with current research governance. Extensive logistics and management experience as the lead clinician for more than 20 medical staff in a Médecins Sans Frontières hospital in Congo

Research interests

We use observational clinical datasets to answer questions about treatment efficacy that cannot be addressed experimentally (via randomised controlled trials). We also lead on a new collaboration between five teaching hospitals to share the electronic health records from critical care (Health Informatics Collaborative,
