Professional background

Nigel Hunt qualified in Dentistry at the University of London in 1974 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Glasgow) in 1978. His specialist orthodontic training resulted in him obtaining a Master of Science of the University of London and a Diploma in Orthodontics (RCS Eng) in 1980, followed by the Membership in Orthodontics (RCS Eng) in 1988. His research work on musculo-skeletal adaptation to disturbances of the cranio-facial complex resulted in the award of a Doctorate in Philosophy in the Faculty of Medicine,University of London in 1992. He was awarded the Fellowship of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1994 and became a member of the World Federation of Orthodontists in 1996. Following a period (1984-1990) as Senior Lecturer in the Orthodontics Unit at Eastman Dental Institute, London he became Consultant Orthodontist to the Eastman Dental Hospital and the Regional Plastic Surgery Unit at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead. In 1992, he was appointed Consultant, Senior Lecturer and Director of Orthodontic Research at the Eastman Dental Institute and Hospital. In 1996 he become Head of the Orthodontics Unit, Eastman Dental Institute and Consultant in Orthodontics with University College London Hospitals Trust. Nigel was appointed Professor of Orthodontics and Head of the Division of Craniofacial Growth and Development in 1998.

Research interests

His clinical expertise is in the management of developing and mature dentofacial deformities with a particular emphasis on patients requiring combined orthodontic and surgical correction of severe facial dysmorphogenesis.


Professor Hunt has published 1 book, contributed to 5 others,  91 peer reviewed papers and 80 abstracts
