He was awarded an MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1994, and then joined the NPEU as a research fellow in perinatal trials, becoming a consultant clinical epidemiologist and then Director. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health.

Currently leads a programme of clinical trials in perinatal care and is Associate Director of Life Study, a new birth cohort study aiming to recruit up to 90,000 women during pregnancy, to collect biomedical and social data as well as biological samples – with the aim of following surviving children for the rest of their lives.

Chairs numerous steering committees and data monitoring committees, and is a member of the executive and board of the NIHR Medicines for Children Research Network ( In 2010 he was made a NIHR Senior Investigator.
