Information, communications and technology (ICT) update
December has been ‘user acceptance testing’ month for the new Cancer Centre IT systems. We've now completed four half days with groups of staff (clinic clerks, PAs, MDT coordinators, consultants and more) where they're had an opportunity to prod and poke at the systems and make sure they're fit for purpose. All of the feedback has proved incredibly useful to the teams building the systems who are striving to take on board as many of the finishing touches as possible in time for the pilots.
From late January we'll be piloting the systems with the Myeloma, CNS/Brain, Bladder and Lung team. These pilots are for the Scheduler linking up all the events on a patient's cancer pathway, the Check and Track systems enabling clinicians and outpatient staff to see where their patients are on the day, and the web Portal giving new ways for patients to interact with their teams and keep up to date on the pathways; these pilots will help shape and guide the new ways of working that will define the Cancer Centre. For more information about our new Cancer Centre IT Systems please contact ben.goretzki@uclh.nhs.uk.
Service development update – chemotherapy
The chemotherapy daycare department is committed to ensuring a positive experience for patients who attend for treatment, both now and in the Cancer Centre. There has been a significant increase in patient numbers over the past few months, and recognise that some patients often experience lengthy waits for their chemotherapy as the department has got busier. We have recently developed an electronic scheduling system which allows us to plan our capacity more carefully and to monitor delays regularly. In January we are implementing a ‘team nursing’ approach to caring for both haematology and oncology patients receiving chemotherapy, which should also help the daycare department to run more efficiently. This is vital to our successful transition to the Cancer Centre as the new area will be so much more spacious than we are used to. For more information contact cancer.centre@uclh.nhs.uk.
Tour afternoon
Seventy five visitors including staff, their friends and families, governors and patient representatives from the patient experience board were given a sneak preview of the Cancer Centre recently. The tour afternoon gave visitors the opportunity to see the first floor outpatients area, the chemotherapy day care area on the second floor, the children and young people’s floor and the haematology services area on the fourth floor. Feedback from the visitors was positive. Comments included, “'great facilities for all staff and patients. Great atmosphere” and “it is a spectacular space for cancer patients”. Trust open event
The Cancer Centre stand drew lots of attention at the Trust’s festive open event at University College Hospital earlier this month. The Cancer Centre stand included a model of the Cancer Centre and Macmillan giveaways. Several hundred people attended the event, designed to showcase the Trust’s services.
