Grown up congenital heart disease (GUCH)

The grown up congenital heart disease (GUCH) unit cares for patients who have been born with a heart defect, often requiring surgery shortly after birth. We also treat patients who have acquired similar conditions, for example patients who have had heart infections which have led to a deterioration of the heart structure.

We provide a wide range of inpatient and outpatient procedures from diagnostic testing through to highly complex heart surgery. We have excellent clinical outcomes. We have close links to teams working at Great Ormond Street and The Hammersmith Hospital so that we can offer our patients the highest level of expertise and achieve the best results possible.

In addition to our clinics at The Heart Hospital we run outreach clinics in Portsmouth and Basildon, which allow patients to be followed-up nearer to their homes following their initial appointment in London.

We also run one of the UK’s largest Maternal Cardiology service which provides care and support for women with a heart problem from planning their pregnancy through to follow-up following delivery.

Patient experience is very important to us. A survey of the unit by the GUCH Patients Association showed 97% of patients rated their care as good or excellent while over 95% had confidence in the clinical team.
