Upper gastrointestinal cancer

This service provides surgical treatment for all cancers of the oesophagus and stomach in the North London Cancer Network. In addition, it has vast experience in the management of benign conditions.

It is made up of three consultant surgeons, established clinical nurse specialists, an enhanced recovery nurse as well as a dedicated dietician and ward staff.

The unit has very close links with the oncology department at UCH and medical and surgical teams in the other North London hospitals.

Conditions treated

  • Stomach cancer
  • Oeosphageal cancer
  • gastro-intestinal stroma tumours of the upper intestinal tract

Service performance

All patients referred from the London Cancer Network

Since February 2011, the unit has performed over 100 major oesophago-gastric resections without any 30-day mortality. The other outcome measures, such as anstomotic leak, involvement of resection margins, nodal yield and return to theatre are better than national averages reported by the latest National Oesophago-gastric Cancer Audit. In addition to this, the unit has developed expertise in complex and re-operative surgery, including oesophageal reconstruction.
