Lung cancer

UCLH has the only truly comprehensive lung cancer service in the UK. We see both local secondary referrals and tertiary referrals from around the UK. Our results on the Lucada national database are outstanding.

Conditions treated

Lung cancer, thymoma, mesothelioma and tracheal cancer.

Service performance

We offer a rapid diagnosis clinic, scoring exceptionally well against national referral targets.

Surgery
All of our thoracic surgery is performed at the Heart Hospital, where we provide dedicated specialist care by leading cardiothoracic surgeons.

Radiotherapy
Our service offers cutting-edge radiotherapy techniques that maximises delivery of radiation to the tumour while minimising the dose to patient's normal tissues. An established twin planning pathway ensures a mobile tumour can be encompassed in a certain stage of the breathing cycle  (respiratory gating) whilst PET-fusion enables us to safely reduce the margin of treatment volumes. We have the capability to deliver intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). On treatment verification of tumour position with cone beam technology and high-resolution portal imaging ensures our delivery is of world-class accuracy.

Chemotherapy
We provide chemotherapy on an outpatient basis at UCH. We have the opportunity to offer the latest anticancer therapies within research trials. Our team includes leaders of national research trials

Bronchoscopy
We offer a broad range of bronchoscopic techniques including autofluorescence for early detection, laser, stenting, ultrasound, photo-dynamic therapy and brachytherapy.

Research
UCLH heads several national trials in chemotherapeutics, early diagnosis, and rapid diagnosis and staging of lung cancers.
