Facial pain

This is a multidisciplinary service unique to the Eastman and is the largest and most comprehensive service of its kind in the UK. Our pain clinics are patient-centred and evidence-based, encouraging patients to take control and self-manage their persistent facial pain. There is access to a wide range of multidisciplinary clinics including psychiatry, clinical psychology, dental, neurology, neurosurgery, oral surgery and complementary medicine.

Please note that we do not accept patients with dental pain. We see patients with facial pain associated with psychiatric disease, facial pain that has persisted for over three months, pain which is widespread and /or part of systemic disease and patients with special needs, for example those with disabilities or who are unable to communicate or have language problems.

Referrals are accepted from GPs based on treatment need, but patients must be registered with a dental practitioner, whose details must be provided with the referral.

Conditions treated

We care for patients with:
  • Burning mouth syndrome
  • Rare facial pains such as post herpetic neuralgia and neuropathic pain
  • Persistent idiopathic facial pain of non-dental origin (previously termed atypical facial pain)
  • Trigeminal neuralgia - primary and secondary
  • Trigeminal neuropathic pain
  • TMD pain/myofacial pain
  • Orofacial pain complicated by other factors such as psychiatric or personality disorders, or psychological problems.

Service statistics

600 patients are seen annually. Of these one third are discharged after initial assessment and the remainder are referred for further management in multidisciplinary clinics.
