The Upper GI service provides treatment for, amongst other conditions, oesophageal and gastric cancers as well as for benign conditions (acid reflux and motility disorders). There is close collaboration with the GI physiology and laser centre.
The surgical team comprises of three full time consultant surgeons who work closely with their medical colleagues.
- Oeosphageal cancer
- Gastric/stomach cancer
- Benign upper Gastrointestinal conditions including gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and achalasia
- Hiatus hernias
- Gallstone disease (laparoscopic cholecystectomy)
- Hernias (open and laparoscopic surgery)
Target referrals are around two weeks for cancer
Routine referrals are seen within around six weeks
Surgery normally takes place within approximately six weeks
Patient support services
Patients are supported throughout their treatment by their consultant and a clinical nurse specialist.
Patient aftercare will be shared between the hospital and GP. Regular follow-up will be arranged even prior to discharge.
