The Harris Neuromedical Intensive Care Unit is a five bedded specialist intensive treatment (ITU) which cares for patients with neurological diseases that require mechanical ventilation. It is the only dedicated neuromedical ITU in the UK. It treats approximately 150 patients per year with a wide variety of conditions.
Conditions treated
- Encephalitis
- Status epilepticus
- Myasthenia gravis
- Botulism
- Guillain-Barré syndrome
- Stroke
Approximately 150 patients are admitted to the ITU each year. If a bed is available, it will be allocated as to need.
The unit admits patients from across London and the UK.
Our anaesthetic and neurology consultants run a multidisciplinary team that includes specialist neuromedical nursing, pharmacist, physiotherapy services, speech and language therapy. Frequent liaison with patients and their relatives is a priority.
Following discharge from Neuromedical ITU, patients are followed up on the general ward by the ITU team and a dedicated outreach team.
