Nursing quality and standards

Essence of Care benchmark programme

All wards and departments participate in a year-round programme to audit nursing and midwifery practice using the Essence of Care benchmarks. Each benchmark topic is led and coordinated by a senior nurse, partnered by a member(s) of the Governing Body to ensure patients’ views are heard. Results and recommendations for improvements in practice are regularly presented at trust-wide meetings to share best practice.

Environmental and nursing standards

Senior nurses (matrons) and ward sisters/charge nurses work in partnership with the Trust facilities team and our PFI partners to ensure we have a safe and clean environment for patients, visitors and staff. Matrons and ward teams regularly assess environmental and nursing standards and a formal monthly round is led by Heads of Nursing for each board. The assessment process is constantly evolving to incorporate changing priorities and current initiatives; results are fed into the nursing score cards which form part of the trust-wide key performance indicators (KPIs).
