UCLH equality objectives 2012 - 2016

In order to meet the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED) under the Equality Act 2010, we have developed our equality objectives, aiming to strengthen our performance in advancing equality for protected groups - both patients and staff.

Our objectives have been developed with feedback from our questionnaire (designed to seek views from a wide group of stakeholders that include: our patients, staff, staff-side, local interests, governors and members), internal equality duty compliance self-assessments and engagement with our local interest groups.

We also sought views on our draft equality objectives by way of publishing them on our website, and feedback received has been taken into account in finalising our objectives.

We have adopted the NHS Equality Delivery System (EDS), a national framework, to help us comply with the Equality Act. The main goals of the EDS are:

  • Better health outcomes for all
  • Improved patient access and experience
  • Empowered, engaged and well-supported staff
  • Inclusive leadership for all

Our equality objectives

During the next four years, we will:

  1. Capture our patient data by protected characteristic (age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation) to inform our priorities.
  2. Ask people from different groups what they think of our services and use existing sources of data to improve patient care.
  3. Improve the working environment of staff with dyslexia.
  4. Adopt the ‘Competency Framework for Equality and Diversity Leadership’ by embedding the framework into our existing processes and systems.
  5. Fully implement the NHS Equality Delivery System (EDS) to improve the Trust’s equality performance and further strengthen the relationships with our local interests (patients, communities and groups, staff, staff-side, governors and members). This includes grading our equality performance.

Monitoring Arrangement

The delivery of our equality objectives will be monitored through Diversity and Equality Steering Group (DESG).

Progress on our equality objectives will be reported in our annual equality information reports.
