  • How do I apply?

    All of our current volunteering opportunities are advertised on the ‘Work with us’ section. Here you will find full details about each individual role including where they are based, times people are needed, and minimum commitment.

  • Are there any restrictions?

    We ask that all volunteers are over the age of 18 and can commit to at least one session a week. For ward based roles we ask that you commit for at least 12 months, other roles are one off, 3 or 6 months. Some roles will require specific experience of qualification(s), these will be listed on the Volunteer Role Description and you will need to provide evidence of this during the recruitment process.
     
    Before applying it is important to consider that volunteering can be emotionally demanding experience so if you are currently or have recently been coping with a medical diagnosis either as a patient, family member or close friend, this may not be the best time for you to volunteer in our patient- facing role.
  • Work Experience and clinical placements

    This department does not offer work experience, internships or clinical placements. All the voluntary opportunities we offer tend to for one or more sessions for a minimum period of 6-12 months.

  • What is your recruitment process?

    We have a simple 5 step process to starting volunteering with us:
     
    1. 1) Apply online: If you see a role that you are interested in online you simply have to go through our online application process and complete an application form. If you see more than role you like you only need to fill in one application form, but need to specify your order of priority. If applying online if difficult for you please contact us and we can supply a paper application form
    2. 2) Initial interview/group induction: All application forms are shortlisted and if successful a member of the Voluntary Services Team will contact you. Depending on the role you could then be invited for a face to face interview or group induction. This is then the opportunity to learn more about the role and volunteering at UCLH All successful applications will then be asked to complete our mandatory e-training on core skills you need to volunteer at the hospital.
    3. 3) UCLH Volunteer induction: All volunteers are then invited to attend the main volunteer induction. This day long session covers all aspects of volunteering at UCLH and covers more information about our hospitals and topics such as infection control and different scenarios you may encounter. We will then also need to get you to complete our DBS forms and get your ID badge.
    4. 4) Local Induction: Once everything has been cleared and all training has been completed we will arrange for your local induction. This is where you are trained by your new supervisor about the role its self and the part of the hospital where you will be based.
    5. 5) Start volunteering!

  • What checks do you need to do?

    Your volunteering with us will be conditional to mandatory checks which we aim to complete these checks as quickly as possible. These checks have to be completed before you can start your volunteering. These include:


    • Identity Checks
      You will be asked to bring Identity documents with you to the induction. These documents also help us complete a Disclosure and Barring check (DBS).

    • DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service)
      Volunteers prior to attending the induction will be asked to complete an online DBS application. To do this, we’ll provide you with a link in your invite letter. It is important to keep a record of your reference number.  Please note how having a criminal record does not automatically exclude you from volunteering as everyone is considered on a case by case basis. If you would like to discuss your situation before applying please do get in touch.

    • Occupational Health
      Volunteers will be asked to complete an online-self declaration form to confirm that are fit for the volunteering post they have applied for. You maybe asked to visit our Occupational Health department to gain clearance.

    • References
      Volunteers will be asked to provide details of 2 referees in the application form. These are people that have known you for over a year in a professional capacity. Getting references back from referees, can sometimes take a while. To help us to do this quickly, please let your referees know that you have been offered a volunteering role and that we will be emailing them; this can really help speed things up.
