Volunteer roles

There are lots of different volunteer roles available at UCLH and in this section you can get an overview of what types of thing are on offer. All our active roles are then advertised on the work with us pages.

Each role has been developed in consultation with ward staff to ensure that they meet patient need and make a difference. All of our volunteering roles are non-clinical and focus on enhancing the patient experience. Some of the volunteering roles we offer include:

  • Welcome Team

Patients and their visitors can be anxious about visiting a hospital and not clear on where they are going. As the first person they meet, your greeting will make all the difference. We want people to feel reassured, comfortable and supported. The volunteer role is about welcoming visitors to the hospital/outpatients department. You’ll help them check in, ensure they feel comfortable and know where they are going.
  • Ward volunteers

Ward volunteers assist in providing a positive hospital experience to patients. Volunteers interact with patients in order to reduce their boredom, improve their mental well-being and support their hospital stay.
  • Citybeat Radio volunteers

Citybeat, the award-winning UCLH community radio service, broadcasts bespoke speech and music programmes 24/7 to patients at UCH Tower, EGA, Westmoreland Street Hospital and the UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre providing an invaluable and uplifting source of entertainment and information during their hospital stay.

Citybeat volunteers work together to produce a diverse range of programmes and visit wards to interact with patients and gather song requests and dedications – featuring them in live shows broadcast from the Citybeat radio studios.
  • Fundraisers

Volunteers are needed to help fundraise and assist with administrative duties to help raise money for support, information, equipment and services beyond those readily available through the NHS, so we can continue to improve patient’s facilities and experience.
  • Complimentary therapists

If you are qualified in aromatherapy, massage, reiki and reflexology you can support our patients through their journey of treatment. Complimentary Therapists will need to be above the age of 18, covered by their own professional insurance and registered with CNHC.
  • Do you have a specialist skill?

If you have other creative talents or specialist skills that you think we can utilise within our hospital setting please contact the Voluntary Services Team.
  • Office based support

Help support the non-clinical side of our work in an office based role. This could include providing much needed admin or project support to a team.
