Introducing the UCLH Virtual Fracture Clinic

13/03/2018 00:00

UCLH has launched a virtual fracture clinic, aiming to improve care while reducing unnecessary outpatient attendances following orthopaedic injury.

At present patients who attend the Emergency Department with a fracture or soft tissue injury and who don’t need to be admitted are usually given an appointment to be seen two to three weeks later in our fracture clinic.

During this time, however, many smaller injuries heal and the appointment is no longer necessary. Pain, mobility problems and work commitments can also make it difficult for patients to attend their appointment.

Now many patients who need a referral will have their care reviewed ‘virtually’.

A senior orthopaedic surgeon and experienced physiotherapist, nurse or practitioner, will review the history and imaging completed in the Emergency Department, within 72 hours, and agree a management plan.

Referrals, appointments and scans and X-rays will all be arranged, as necessary, and the patient told about the plan by phone and letter.

Bindiya Bhandari, orthopaedic clinical specialist physiotherapist, said: “The Virtual Fracture Clinic will allow patients to be assessed and directed towards the most appropriate treatment much earlier than before. This could involve attending a specialist orthopaedic clinic, a referral to physiotherapy or advice on how to care for their injury themselves.”

Chris Dann, deputy divisional manager for Surgical Specialties, said: "Before launching the service, we consulted with staff from trauma & orthopaedics and the ED, listened to patient feedback and identified best practice from other providers around the country.

"The anticipated reduction in patients requiring new appointments will minimise unnecessary (and sometime painful) journeys to the hospital and reduce waiting times for those who do need to see a member of the surgical team."
