CityBeat – the Trust’s in-house hospital radio service – has scooped a national award for its specialist music programming.

The “journey  through jazz “show, which was created, produced and presented by Tom Macleod,  won the bronze prize for the  'Best Specialist Music Programme' in the National Hospital Radio Awards.

Citybeat community radio broadcasts exclusively to UCLH patients and is run by the UCLH Voluntary Services Department. It broadcasts from purpose-built studios on the sixth floor at 250 Euston Road.

Citybeat co-ordinator Katie Ginger said: “I have always appreciated the time and effort that volunteers give to us.  This is the first time that we have been shortlisted and also won an award.  I am absolutely delighted that their work has been recognised. “

Tom joined Citybeat as a volunteer last year after graduating from University and wanted experience making and presenting programmes. He went on to work part-time for BBC London sport programmes and, after leaving the BBC, has now secured a full-time job presenting his own programme for local radio.

CityBeat’s Cat Dal was short listed for the “Female Presenter of the Year” category for her live and pre-recorded specialist music shows. She is currently working on pre-recorded breakfast shows for Citybeat, as well as working at XFM as their Live Guide music reporter.

Volunteers produce a diverse range of programmes that are broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week. From book reviews and studio interviews to patient request shows, the station delivers comprehensive output to suit almost every taste.

Lesley Borzoni, UCLH voluntary services manager, said ” I am immensely proud of the volunteers who commit so much time, effort and enthusiasm to producing a wide variety of high quality programmes, and it is a great boost to us all to know that a part of this has also been recognised nationally
