UCLH is hosting awareness raising events next week (19-23 May) to highlight the services and support available for our deaf patients, carers, visitors and staff.

A nurse who has specialist knowledge on hearing loss, will be on hand to answer questions at our information stands.

The UCLH events support Deaf Awareness Week which is organised by the UK Council on Deafness with the theme ‘equality in communication for all’.

The information stands will be manned between 10am-2pm on specific days at each of our hospital sites: the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre on Monday (19), University College Hospital and The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (20), Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital (21) The Heart (22) and Eastman Dental Hospital (23)

You can also meet representatives from Action on Hearing Loss who will be at the University College Hospital and The Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital display stands. A representative from the British Deaf Association will be on the Eastman Dental Hospital stand.

UCLH is keen to find out your views on how you think we can promote equality and good communication with all our patients.  A focus group may be established in the coming months to gather feedback from Deaf patients, visitors and staff.

Meanwhile, the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery has produced an information film for deaf patients in British Sign Language, spoken English and captions.

The film was developed by deaf-led media company Remark! with a grant from The National Brain Appeal’s Small Acorn fund.
