Our values: safety, kindness, teamwork and improving

Patients and the public are invited to help UCLH celebrate the launch of its new values.

The event will take place at the University College Hospital atrium between 2pm and 3pm on Wednesday, 27 June.


‘Safety’, ‘kindness’, ‘teamwork’ and ‘improving’ have been identified as the four words which best describe the way we should interact with patients and colleagues every day. They are our new Trust values and should be at the heart of everything we do.

UCLH performs consistently well in annual staff and patient surveys. The vast majority of staff would recommend the Trust as a place to work or be treated and inpatients rated us as the top performing acute trust in London.

The Trust can improve on this strong performance through a clear set of values and behaviours which underpin everything we do. It is about ensuring that all staff and all patients have a positive experience during all interactions.

Since January, more than 1,000 staff and patients have been involved in the process of establishing the values and behaviours which embody the very best of UCLH.

And their responses were listened to. The result is the launch of a new set of values which underpin our Trust's vision and top ten objectives and define how we deliver them.

Sir Robert Naylor, UCLH chief executive, said: “At UCLH we are known for the quality of our clinical outcomes and research. We share an ambition to be equally as well known for the experience our patients and staff have, in being cared for and working here.

“Over 1,000 members of staff and patients have been involved in developing our new values. These will guide everything we do, how we make our decisions, how we recruit new staff and appraise existing ones and how we are with patients and with each other.

“The links between improved staff experience and better staff experience are clear. As is the evidence that shows a better patient experience contributes to safer patient care and better outcomes. By living to our values everyday, together we can make this happen.”

In its vision statement, the Trust is committed to providing ‘top-quality patient care, excellent education and world class research’ and our top ten objectives reflect that. The Trust believes that these can only be delivered through values and behaviours that are firmly embedded in our working lives.

Katherine Fenton, chief nurse, said: “Compliments from patients show that, at our best, we provide exceptional care. We have much to be proud of already. Articulating our values in this way will help ensure that we can offer a high quality experience to every patient and every colleague, every day.”
