Dr Rachel Batterham, clinic lead of the bariatrics service at UCLH, has been awarded the 2014 Lilly Scientific Achievement Award by The Obesity Society.

The award was presented in recognition of Dr Batterham’s achievements in research, through the work of her laboratory aimed at increasing understanding of how body weight is regulated and developing new therapies for the treatment of patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes.

She is recognized internationally as an exceptional clinician scientist with the rare ability to undertake cutting edge basic science, detailed animal and human physiological phenotyping, as well as patient-based studies, allowing her to run a truly world-class bench-to bedside obesity research programme.

“I am truly honoured to be the recipient of this award,” says Dr Batterham. “As an obesity and diabetes physician, I am acutely aware of the need for effective, safe treatment options for patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes.

“Our work has helped to identify the important role of the gut in controlling bodyweight and blood glucose levels. The key challenge now is to harness the biology of the gut therapeutically and to develop personalized obesity and diabetes treatments.”

The award, made possible through an annual grant from the Eli Lilly pharmaceutical company, recognises Dr Batterham and four others for excellence in an established research career.

Dr Batterham is the Head of the Centre for Weight loss, Metabolic and Endocrine Surgery at UCLH and the Head of the Centre for Obesity Research, Department of Medicine at UCL.

The UCLH centre opened in July 2007 and is now one of the largest obesity/bariatric centres in the UK. The centre offers comprehensive medical and surgical services for the treatment of adolescents and adults with obesity.
