Aiming for the top!

One of our apprentices has gone to Downing Street. Tasnim Khatun, who joined UCLH as a staff development apprentice, met young people from around Britain at a reception at No 10.

The event, held in conjunction with Hawk Training, one of our training providers, was designed to celebrate the success of apprenticeships and highlight the benefits of gaining new skills and qualifications.

Tasnim, who was one of the winners of our NHS birthday bake-off, successfully completed her apprenticeship and is now one of our staff development co-ordinators.

She said: “The visit to No 10 was such a great experience. I had the opportunity to meet and engage with other apprentices from a range of trusts, which I wouldn’t normally get the chance to do.

“I remember starting at UCLH and hearing about other apprentices here going to No 10 and thinking ‘that must have been amazing’; then a year later, I was able to go myself!”

Some 87 apprentices studied with us at UCLH last year – 35 of which were new recruits.

We hope to have even more apprentices next year, with the chance to gain qualifications as a nursing assistant, healthcare science support worker, ward clerk, personal assistant, supervisor or manager.

Caroline Theodorou, apprenticeship lead, said: “Apprenticeship qualifications have evolved over the years and what we have today is a wide range of programmes from GCSE to Master’s degree level.

“It doesn’t matter what age you are or what stage you are at in your career, an apprenticeship programme is a great way to achieve a nationally-recognised qualification while working at UCLH.”
