The bi-weekly radio programme is broadcast on NHS Choices every fortnight on Wednesday afternoon on the NHS choices website. The host, BBC Radio 4 presenter Dominic Arkwright, chats with experts and celebrities about various health and lifestyle topics. You can listen to the programme here.

This week, Dominic spoke to staff from the urgent and emergency care team at University College Hospital who treat 450 patients a day. He heard about the challenges they face on a daily basis and why patients visiting A&E when it’s not a genuine emergency put unnecessary pressures on the system. Some of the alternatives to going to A&E were also explored in the programme.

Why should you fast before an anaesthetic? The answer to this and other questions about anaethetics – used during tests and surgical procedures to numb sensation in certain areas of the body or induce sleep – were answered in a fascinating section featuring two anaethetists from University College Hospital.

UCLH staff will be appearing in more Health Today Radio programmes in the near future so keep tuned in.
