A time to remember

Family and friends of patients joined UCLH staff at a special memorial event organised by our Critical Care Unit.

Around 60 members of staff and loved ones gathered to remember those who had passed away in our care.

Relatives told how they drew comfort from releasing they were not alone. One described A Time to Remember, which is to become an annual event, as “just perfect”.

Another said it was “truly amazing".

The event was organised by two of our charge nurses, Stephen Pearson and Harry Doherty, with support from general manager, Meena Patel, and hosted by nurse consultant John Welch.

The programme of events included a reading, music, eulogies and a minute’s silence.

Relatives lit a flame of remembrance beside a framed photo of their loved one and were given flower bulbs to plant as a gift of remembrance.

They also had the opportunity to share stories with one another, and with staff, over a buffet lunch.

The eulogies, some of which were read by staff on behalf of relatives, were particularly moving, with many expressing their thanks for the kindness shown to them by Critical Care.

Written feedback was also poignant, saying: “I want to thank you and everyone else that was involved in A Time to Remember today.

"I thought that everything was just so perfect and it was a privilege to have been asked to attend.

"A lot of hard work must have gone into all the arrangements and you did a wonderful job.

“It is so sad to listen to everybody’s stories and, whilst I am alone, I realise that I am not the only one in this awful situation.

“Once I have calmed down and can sit and reflect I am sure that today will have helped me a lot. Please thank everyone involved, you are a very special team.”

Another relative said of the autumn event: “We would like to thank everybody for the beautiful remembrance service, it was perfect and I'm sure it brought comfort to everybody that attended.”
