A week in Tweets

Meet Jodie Powell – UCLH’s Twitter champion

Jodie, an advanced nurse practitioner and Darzi Fellow, is curating the @NHS Twitter account all this week.

She plans to post at least three messages a day, shining a light on her work at UCLH and “flying the flag for nurses”.

Set up last autumn to provide the public with first-hand accounts of life on the NHS frontline, the @NHS Twitter account is run by a different person each week.

A fortnight ago, it was the turn of one of UCLH’s patients.

Mark Styles, who lives with Kennedy’s Disease, a progressive neurodegenerative condition, Tweeted about everything from his train journey to the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the research he is taking part in there, to his work and his favourite cakes.

Jodie, a cardiothoracic nurse, found reading patient and staff stories on @NHS Twitter so fascinating that she put herself forward as a curator.

She said: “No two working days are the same and this is a great chance to tell the public a bit about what nurses do and how diverse the job can be.”

She will also use her public platform to discuss the work she is doing as a Darzi Fellow, including a project on improving patient nutrition.

Jodie’s career path and information on UCLH’s Exemplar Ward programme will also be on the agenda.

The Exemplar Ward programme aims to create a consistent gold standard of care and service across all of the hospitals in the Trust, creating the best possible environment for patients and staff.

Jodie also plans to share tips on how she tries to stay healthy – both physically and mentally.  But it won’t be all work and no play – she will also Tweet about her hobbies.

She said: “I am looking forward to shining a light on nursing at UCLH and celebrating all the great work we do here.”
