Black cab rank for hospital staff and patients

27/07/2017 00:00
University College Hospital is the first in London to have its own dedicated licensed black taxi rank for staff, patients and visitors. And, even better, passengers will be eligible for a 10 per cent discount on their fare.

The taxi rank is ideal for staff who don’t want to wander up and down Tottenham Court Road looking for a cab. It also offers a convenient, safe and secure service for patients and has a built in ramp for wheel chair access and a swivel seat for the less able. Rank 5997 has room for two cabs in Beaumont Place and is clearly marked.

Tom Hughes, UCLH operations manager, property and transport, has been working with the London Licensed Black Cab Association, Transport for London (TFL) and the landlord who owns the section of land. The painting of the area and signage was funded by TfL.

Tom said: “Everyone has been really enthusiastic about the idea and after a successful trial we’ve decided the rank should be a permanent fixture. Many of our patients seem to prefer to travel in licensed black cabs but didn’t like having to go to Tottenham Court Road to try to hail one. This will be so much easier for them and for staff too.”

Cab drivers Ray Alleeson and Kevin Barrett have been regulars at the rank during the three month trial period and that is set to continue. The rank will be open from around 10.30am to 9.00pm.

Kevin and Ray say they are keen supporters of the NHS and are looking forward to offering safe and secure travel to everyone who uses UCLH.
