15/06/2016 00:00
Our new non-executive director Althea Efunshile has been awarded a CBE in the Queen’s 90th Birthday Honours for services to arts and culture. Althea took up her appointment at UCLH on the 2 May.

She is currently deputy chief executive of Arts Council England where she has worked for 10 years, and is responsible for the development and implementation of its national investment strategy, corporate governance and planning, and operational delivery. She will step down from her position at Arts Council England at the end of October to focus on a small number of non-executive director roles.

Previously Althea held various director level roles at the Department for Education and Skills. She also worked in a number of local authorities, including the London Borough of Lewisham where she was firstly director of education and community services, and then executive director for education and culture. She started her career as a secondary school teacher in the London Borough of Brent.

Althea said: “I was completely surprised, a few weeks ago, when I read the contents of a mysterious looking brown envelope marked ‘Cabinet Office’ that had arrived in the post! I am delighted to have received this honour.”
