Carbon cutting award for UCLH

Solar panels, intelligent lighting systems, efficient heating and cooling systems: just a few of the energy saving features that have won UCLH a mark of excellence for its carbon-cutting achievements.
These and other initiatives have helped UCLH reduce its carbon output by 5.2 per cent per patient treated at UCLH in the past two years. With a 20 per cent increase in patients in the last two years (compared to the previous two years), UCLH is continually trying to find ways to keep carbon emissions in check.
UCLH was accredited with a Mark of Excellence by The Carbon Trust ( - for the third consecutive two year period - in recognition of its success in measuring, managing and reducing emissions.
The University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre which opened to patients in 2012 was specifically designed to include the latest systems, technology and practices to provide treatment in a carbon efficient way. The centre includes solar panels to supplement mains supply, intelligent lighting and blind systems which sensitively react to changes in the environment and advanced automated energy saving controls linked to major plant and equipment.
Kieran McDaid, Director of Estates at UCLH, said: “UCLH is continually seeking ways to reduce its carbon footprint, save energy and use resources in the most efficient way possible and we are delighted that The Carbon Trust has formally recognised our continuing efforts.
“Since 2007/08, which has become our baseline year, we believe we have become leaders in the field. In that time, UCLH has reduced the amount of CO2 emissions per patient treated by an impressive 35 per cent.
“We will continue to find ways of saving energy in line with our objectives to deliver high quality patient experience and customer service excellence. With the expectation of treating even more patients in the years to come, UCLH have many more carbon reduction projects in the pipeline.”
