Cladding and fire safety at UCLH

13/07/2017 00:00
Following the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower we have been performing additional fire safety inspections across all of our sites.

Our inspections have concluded that the cladding used on our University College Hospital site, including the tower, is not of concern.

There is, however, an area of cladding on a building within the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery site which has not passed testing because of the type of material used. It is important to note that the material used behind the cladding has fire-resistant properties.

The building, 33 Queen Square, is partially-clad and contains outpatient areas which are open during daytime hours only. Other areas of the building are used by our academic partner UCL. There are no inpatient wards.

We would like to assure our patients, staff and visitors that their safety is our top priority and that our fire assessors have said that this building is a safe place to visit and work.

The building has numerous fire safety features such as fire doors, fire compartments and a detection and alarm system which we test every week.

In addition, we have reviewed our existing fire procedures and implemented the following fire safety measures as a precaution:

  • Introduced regular fire patrols of the area
  • Undertaken additional fire risk assessments of the building
  • Reviewed the fire safety features of the building to ensure they are fully functional
  • Reinforced the importance of good housekeeping practices to staff such as keeping doors and windows closed when areas are not in use, and turning off non-essential equipment when it is not needed
  • Arranged for additional fire safety training for staff on this site
  • Implemented new fire evacuation procedures

In the coming weeks we will continue to work with our regulator, NHS Improvement, to determine what other actions are necessary, including what, if any, modifications are required to the cladding.
