Emergency care at UCLH is changing

From 22 February 2016 we are changing how we provide emergency care at UCLH - right patient, right care, right now

These changes have been introduced to improve patients’ experience, to make sure they are seen quickly by the right clinician and to improve outcomes.

The changes include:

  • New model of carfe for the emergency department

Patients in the emergency department will now be treated in four different areas according to their need:
• Primary care;
• Acute assessment area;
• Acute care area;
• Urgent treatment centre.

  • A new emergency floor

Based on the ground floor of the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wing, and next to the emergency department, the emergency floor has two components:
• An Emergency Day Unit (EDU) for medically expected patients, referred for specialist review by their GP, and patients referred by the emergency department for medical specialist review and admission;
• A clinical decision unit – this has been relocated and made bigger.

Joud Abduljawad, divisional clinical director for emergency services said “I am really pleased to be introducing this new model of care and new emergency floor at UCLH. It will help us put patients’ needs right at the heart of the service and will ensure every patient see the right clinician in the right place, first time.”

Out of hours
The normal working hours for the Communications Unit are Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm. The only media enquiries that will be answered outside of these working hours are urgent enquiries and those relating to major incidents. To access the out-of-hours service call switchboard on 0845 155 5000.
