Experiment with new ideas about research

19/05/2015 00:00
UCLH is celebrating International Clinical Trials Day on Wednesday (20 May) with information stalls, tours and activities across our hospital sites.

Patients and public can find out more about clinical research, including trials happening at UCLH. There will be opportunities for the public to shape the research agenda and get involved in trials.

UCLH is a world-class leader in clinical research and at any one time has more than 1,000 research projects taking place in its hospitals. The work at UCLH ranges from experimental medicine, which looks at the causes of disease, how certain treatments work and whether they are safe, to large scale clinical trials which test the effectiveness of new drugs.

The following locations will be open to patients and the public:

  • University College Hospital 2-4pm, Ground floor atrium, 235 Euston Road, NW1 2BU
  • The UCL BioResource team, the Clinical Research Facility staff, the Joint Research Office and the UCL Cancer Trials Centre will be demonstrating research experiments and games and providing information on  how the public can get actively involved in the design and conduct of research.
  • Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital 9.30am-12.30pm in the Nuffield paediatric waiting area and 1.30-4.30pm in adult outpatients, 330 Gray’s Inn Road, WC1X 8DA
  • Our clinical research teams at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital will be asking the public what they would like them to investigate and inviting them to take part in quizzes about ear research.
  • Leonard Wolfson Experimental Neurology Centre 11.30am-3pm, Ground Floor, Albany Wing, National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery, Queen Square, WC1N 3BG

Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the state-of-the-art facility and meet the clinical research staff. Email: r.castaneda@ucl.ac.uk for more information.

This year’s message is:  it’s “OK to ask” about clinical research. The campaign, led by the National Institute for Health Research, encourages patients to ask their doctor, nurse or consultant about research opportunities available to them.
