The National Institute for Health Research/Wellcome UCLH Clinical Research Facility in the Elizabeth Garret Anderson Wing is opening its doors to the public to celebrate International Clinical Trials Day

The facility is offering patients, the public and school children tours and a hands-on experience of research.

In the morning, year 7 and 8 children from local schools have been invited to come to meet staff and researchers and to have a go at a range of interactive activities including looking at cells under a microscope and taking each other’s blood pressure.

The facility is running tours in the afternoon for the general public. As there are only two tours – at 2pm and 3.30pm – booking is strongly recommended.

Demonstrations will show how data is collected in research. Topics covered include:

  • neurological testing – see the different tests we use in research
  • cellular microscopy – get a close-up look at different cells
  • musculoskeletal and kidney ultrasounds  – watch ultrasounds being taken and find out how  they help researchers
  • infection control – learn how we keep patients safe.

To book onto an afternoon session please contact the Clinical Research Facility on 020 344 76036 or email GENERALCRF@uclh.nhs.uk

Details of other events at UCLH celebrating International Clinical Trials Day include:

  • The NIHR University College London Hospitals Biomedical Research Centre is running a workshop with Macmillan Cancer Support exploring how involving lay people can help researchers improve recruitment to clinical trials – patients and the public are welcome to attend. Contact Madeleine Stewart on 020 3108 2199 or madeleine.stewart@ucl.ac.uk
  • The Cancer Clinical Trials Unit is running a stall in the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centreproviding information about research.

The National Institute for Health Research/Wellcome UCLH Clinical Research Facility is an area of the hospital dedicated to clinical research. The facility includes 20 beds, laboratory, a pharmacy and specialist research staff. At any one time there can be over 50 research projects taking place at the facility. The facility is on the ground floor of the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wing, University College Hospital, Grafton Way, London WC1E 6DB.

International Clinical Trials Day is celebrated around the world on or near the 20 May each year, to commemorate the day that James Lind started his famous trial on the deadly disease scurvy. It provides a focal point to raise awareness of the importance of research to health care, and highlights how partnerships between patients and healthcare practitioners are vital to high-quality, relevant research.
