Help us make a Perfect Week and learn for the future

UCLH is running a ‘Perfect Week’ from Thursday 19 November aimed at improving patients’ care, experience and journey through University College Hospital and beyond.

The week, running until Wednesday 25 November, is based on examples elsewhere that show by running a Perfect Week we can rapidly improving patient flow and produce a step-change in performance, safety and the experience patients have in our care. It will also help us to be ready for the arrival Royal Free Haematology and ring fence elective orthopaedic beds, crucial for patient safety.

During the week there will be a focus on how our staff work together, testing new ideas and working closely with local partners such as the council and other community providers to keep patient flow as smooth as possible.

Some of the measures we’ll introduce include: a “major incident type” operational command centre to receive key information, coordinate response to information and escalation to ensure we achieve optimum patient flow and experience,  senior medical, nursing and managerial team to respond to escalation deal with any issues and a visible leadership presence to encourage and break down difficult barriers to flow and care. We will aim to reduce any meetings or unnecessary bureaucracy releasing senior nursing, medical and operational staff to focus on the week.

We also need patients to help us in making sure you’re discharged safely, by asking four key questions of the doctors and nurses caring for you:

• If you’re unsure, ask - what’s wrong with me?
• What’s going to happen to me in hospital today and tomorrow?
• What do I need to do before I go home?
• When am I going home?

Help us to help you by getting the ward staff to answer these simple questions, so we can get you home as quickly and safely as possible.

Out of hours
The normal working hours for the Communications Unit are Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm. The only media enquiries that will be answered outside of these working hours are urgent enquiries and those relating to major incidents. To access the out-of-hours service call switchboard on 0845 155 5000.
