Improving our Emergency Department

Entrance to Emergency Department is now on Gower Street

Following the completion of building works to improve our Emergency Department (ED), the entrance to the ED is now on Gower Street.

Marcel Levi, chief executive said: “Our Emergency Department is the front door to UCLH. We have invested £21.7 million to redevelop and expand the service so we are in the best position possible to see and treat the 130,000 people who will come through these doors each year.”

The extension of the department has been achieved by joining the main University College Hospital building and the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wing at the ground floor level. We now have:

  • one interconnected emergency department,
  • a new waiting area and reception,
  • new assessment rooms,
  • new imaging and diagnostic suite,
  • an urgent treatment centre with 12 bays and three treatment rooms,
  • a new entrance for ambulances.

Saskia Stephenson, Senior Nurse in the ED said: “We are really delighted to have this new space, but we are still very busy. We ask everyone to think carefully about whether you need emergency care at hospital before you come to the UCLH ED. Remember to call NHS 111, visit NHS Choices or speak to your GP for advice before deciding if you need to come to us.”

Please note that the entrance on Euston Road has permanently closed.
