Improving our services for Emergency Department patients

Plans have been submitted to Camden Council to expand the Emergency Department at University College Hospital.

Improving our services for Emergency Department patients

Since the hospital opened in 2005, demand for emergency services at University College Hospital has doubled, a trend consistent with emergency departments across the NHS.

Sir Robert Naylor, UCLH chief executive, said: “University College Hospital prides itself on delivering top quality patient care and a positive experience to all our patients. Since opening our Emergency Department in 2005, we have seen a doubling in demand for emergency care and we need to expand our capacity to continue to provide excellent care for local people.

“The proposed expansion will be within the footprint of the existing hospital by making better use of the space overall.

“We will phase the improvements over two years to minimise any disruption and to ensure we maintain our status as one of the best performing emergency departments in the country.”

The proposals include:

  • Streamlining our services to provide faster access in the Emergency Department
  • New layout on the ground floor to create one, larger emergency department
Moving the emergency department entrance from Euston Road onto Gower Street
  • Re-directing the ambulance route through Grafton Way and onto Beaumont Place and moving the private taxi drop-off to new bays on Euston Road
  • Moving the existing disabled parking bays from one side of Beaumont Place to the other
  • Provision of signage and way-finding information when changes are made to pedestrian and vehicle access.

If you would like more information, there will be a display stand in the University College Hospital atrium between 11am and 5pm on Friday 24 May.
