"Inspirational" UCLH patient on Countryfile this weekend

13/09/2018 00:00
This Sunday, on BBC One at 7pm, Countryfile will follow the story of a young UCLH patient who will be leading one of the rambles in aid of Children in Need later this year.

The programme will focus on Amy Foster's story, her inspirational recovery, and her preparation for the ramble in October. Scenes were shot with Amy at home and on a return visit to UCLH where she also met entertainers who work with the charity Spread a Smile which exists "to show there is still joy and laughter to be experienced, even in the most desperate of situations".

Life in hospital for a child or teenager with a serious illness can mean isolation, boredom, frustration, fear, painful treatment, sometimes life changing surgeries and time away from parents, siblings and friends.

Spread a Smile's entertainers include magicians, face-painters, artists, singers and fairies. They visit young people in hospital and they are trained to know just what to do to get a smile out of everyone they see.

Young people supported by Children in Need will join Countryfile on a series of walking challenges across the UK. Last year this raised £1.8 million to help support some of Britain’s most disadvantaged youngsters. This year, some of the money raised will go to Spread a Smile.

Countryfile, next Sunday 16th September, 7pm, BBC ONE
