Jamie Cullum has written this year’s BBC Children in Need single, ‘Love Is In The Picture’, it was announced today, after spending an afternoon at University College Hospital to learn more about two projects supported by BBC Children in Need.

The emotive, uplifting single was written by Jamie especially for BBC Children in Need to celebrate and embrace the charity, and the children it works to support.

After revealing the news live on BBC Radio 2 this morning, Jamie said: “Earlier this month I visited two projects funded by BBC Children in Need, both of which work tirelessly to bring smiles and a sense of normalcy to children and young people.

“It’s an absolute privilege to have been asked to provide a song for this year’s BBC Children in Need campaign. I hope it goes on to raise money for more projects like those I visited.”

Jamie came to University College Hospital to see the work of play specialists and activities volunteers on the children and young people’s wards. He met play specialist Fiona Eva, whose work is funded by a grant secured by the UCLH Charitable Foundation from BBC Children in Need, and Spread a Smile volunteers.

University College London Hospitals Charitable Foundation benefits from a three-year grant of £97,411 to fund an activities coordinator who provides workshops and support services to children and young people at University College Hospital. By providing a myriad of activities and workshops young people are positively empowered, are supported to better manage their feelings and have improved life skills for the future.

Spread a Smile benefit from a three-year grant of £45,000 to provide entertainment in hospitals for children and young people with prolonged and life limiting illnesses. Through the sessions, Spread a Smile aims to improve the children and young people’s emotional wellbeing and provide a distraction from their illness.  Spread a Smile's activities directly address the disadvantages experienced by seriously ill children and young people in hospital, and their siblings, helping them when they need it most.

‘Love Is In The Picture’ is available as a stand-alone charity single from today.

Jamie will give its debut television performance live on the 2018 BBC Children in Need Appeal Show on Friday 16 November, at 9.50pm on BBC One.

The official BBC Children in Need single has an extensive history and, as the official artist behind this year’s release, Jamie joins a long line of celebrated performers including Katie Melua, Craig David, Jess Glynne, Gareth Malone’s All Star Choir, Ellie Goulding, and Girls Aloud.

All profits from the single will go to the charity, with a minimum of 40p from each single sale.

BBC Children in Need currently funds 2,700 projects supporting disadvantaged children and young people in communities across the UK.
