Mayor and Home Office Minister visit The Lighthouse

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and Victoria Atkins, minister for crime, safeguarding and vulnerability, were special guests at the official opening of The Lighthouse on 5 December

This pioneering facility is led by UCLH and offers a full range of support services from dedicated experts, all under one roof, for children and young people who have experienced sexual abuse.

It is a two-year pilot commissioned by NHS England in partnership with the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC). UCLH works in partnership with The Tavistock & Portman NHS Foundation Trust, the NSPCC and the Metropolitan Police Service.

Sadiq Khan said:  “The Lighthouse minimises the need to face multiple interviews with social workers, the police and medical professionals in different settings by bringing these services together with the criminal justice system in one place as part of the public health approach I am leading to tackle the complex causes of crime in the capital.”

“To experience sexual abuse is an horrific ordeal, so it’s essential that we do everything we can to make the path to recovery and justice as simple as possible.”

The Lighthouse - based on the Icelandic Barnahus (‘Child House’) and the American Child Advocacy Centre model - promotes a multi-agency approach that puts the health and wellbeing of the young person first. It provides early support after the trauma of abuse, increases the length of time support is provided to children and families, gathers more effective evidence from interviews and offers speedier progress in investigations and court cases.

Marcel Levi, UCLH chief executive, said: “The Lighthouse brings together a team with all the medical, psychological and support expertise needed. Working together we can make a positive difference to children’s and young people’s recovery from the trauma of sexual abuse.”

The launch event was attended by professionals in health, social services, police and the voluntary sector from the boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington whose residents can use The Lighthouse services.
