A collaboration between Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCLH has won the award for data quality in clinical coding (specialist trust) at the CHKS Top Hospitals Awards for the second consecutive year.

The CHKS Top Hospitals Awards celebrate healthcare organisations across the UK and internationally that have excelled in patient safety, data quality, patient experience, quality of care and healthcare efficiency.

The data quality award for specialist trusts is a national award given in recognition of the importance of clinical coding and data quality, and the essential role they play in ensuring appropriate patient care and financial reimbursement from commissioners.

Moorfields was shortlisted based on the data it regularly submits to NHS Digital and a range of data quality indicators. Clinical coding, which underpins many of the data quality measures, is carried out by the clinical coding team from UCLH on behalf of Moorfields.

The awards ceremony was held at the Royal College of Physicians and was hosted by Sue Saville, former ITV News Medical Correspondent.

Gregory Stephenson, head of Coding Services at UCLH, said: “We are delighted to have helped Moorfields win the award for 2 consecutive years; this is testament to the ongoing hard work of the coding team based at Moorfields. Working as part of the wider UCLH coding team we have been able to deliver high quality coding services for a range of healthcare providers.

“A collaborative and strong team work approach has supported the service in going from strength to strength and becoming a clinical coding centre of excellence.”

Ranjita Sen, head of performance and information at Moorfields Eye Hospital, said: "I'm delighted that the team's work alongside UCLH has been recognised. We were competing with some fantastic, high profile organisations so to be acknowledged as leaders in the field of clinical coding is a really proud moment for us.

“We’ve been working extremely hard over the past few years to improve data quality throughout the trust so we can provide the best care for our patients across the Moorfields network and help research through high quality diagnostic information."
