NHNN featured in BBC Radio 4 documentary and Observer article

The Observer literary editor Robert McCrum, a longstanding patient of the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, has made a documentary about his rehabilitation at the NHNN.

The two-part documentary called "Brain Attack" aired on Radio 4 last week and today and can be heard here and here.

In an article in The Observer about advances in stroke treatment, Mr McCrum wrote of suffereing a stroke 20 years ago at the age of 42 and returning to the NHNN to take part in a rehabilitation programme run by Dr Nick Ward, with the help of therapists Kate Kelly, Fran Brander, Caroline O’Neill and Jo Briggs.

“… I went back to the National Hospital (for) a programme directly inspired by the discovery of plasticity in the brain. In simple terms. Ward and his team (admit patients with upper limb difficulties) and subject them to a programme of intensive physiotherapy,” he wrote.

“Perhaps it was inevitable that I should make my way back to the National Hospital where I had first been treated in 1995. There, as part of my coming to terms with what had happened to me, I wrote a kind of war memoir, My Year Off: Rediscovering Life After A Stroke, and have been associated with the hospital ever since.”

Among the tributes he paid to staff and the hospital, which he described as a “pioneering neurological hospital”, he spoke about “a reinvigorated attitude to physiotherapy” and the hospital being permeated by “an air of hope and determination” and an “upbeat and positive” atmosphere.

Of his experience at the NHNN, he said: “Within two or three sessions, my left arm, and hand, were beginning to do things that hitherto had been unthinkable. After two weeks in Queen Square, I had been given a new physiotherapy programme, renewed optimism for the future and a fresh sense of purpose.”
