UCLH is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor David Lomas as a new non-executive director. Professor Lomas is the Vice-Provost (Health) at UCL and replaces Professor Sir John Tooke, who stepped down at the end of July.

Professor Lomas said: “I am delighted to be joining the board of UCLH and to be able to contribute to its continuing success.”

Professor Lomas was previously Dean of UCL Medical Sciences and Chair of Medicine, a position he held since the start of 2013.

Before that, he was Professor of Respiratory Biology in the University of Cambridge and Honorary Consultant Physician at Addenbrooke’s and Papworth Hospitals, and Deputy Director of the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research.

The Vice-Provost (Health) serves as Academic Director for UCLPartners Academic Health Science Centre, facilitating and guiding the development of its six academic medical centres.

In this role, Professor Lomas will promote close partnership working across the whole geography of UCLPartners to ensure that research expertise and outputs are combined across the whole translational pathway for the overall benefits of patients and the population.

The postholder is also Head of the UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences.

The position leads an office responsible for facilitating health initiatives across UCL and building on key relationships with NHS partners, other health care trusts and NHS England. The Vice-Provost (Health) also leads UCL’s participation in the establishment of the Francis Crick Institute, due to open in 2015.

Richard Murley, UCLH chairman, said: “On behalf of the board I would like to welcome David. His expertise will be a great asset for us as we continue to deliver our vision of top quality care for patients while meeting the economic challenges which are facing the NHS.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the significant contribution of Professor Sir John Tooke during his time in this position. He worked with great success to foster a spirit of partnership across UCL and UCLH, building mutually beneficial collaborative networks to answer the questions that no one institution, however prestigious, can answer alone.”
