New films focus on learning disabilities

The first in a series of simple, short films co-produced by UCLH has been launched to help patients with learning disabilities, coinciding with Mencap’s national awareness week.

The film (below) follows a patient as they arrive for an antenatal appointment at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wing and offers reassurance about the process of coming to hospital.

It was made in conjunction with The Advocacy Project and drew on patient feedback.

Nine more films are planned over the next year featuring various departments across the trust.

To further support National Learning Disability Week, our learning disabilities team and members of the Camden and Islington Advocacy Projects chatted to staff, patients and public in the atrium at University College Hospital.

Our team include clinical nurse specialist Tim Buck who is leading the project and provides support and guidance to patients and the staff caring for them.

He said: "UCLH has an absolute commitment to raising the quality of care for patients with learning disabilities. We want to raise awareness of learning disabilities, the staff training that is available and talk about how we can meet the individual needs of these patients and their carers.”

There’s a growing awareness throughout the NHS that people with learning disabilities face health inequalities, in terms of accessing appropriate treatments. This can be made worse by poor communication and misunderstandings.

There are 1.5 million people with a learning disability in the UK, many of whom find it harder than others to learn, understand and communicate and they are twice as likely to be admitted to hospital each year as the general population.
