New theatres and wards at National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery

Patients who needs some of the most specialist care will now benefit from new theatres and wards.

The work is part of £23 million investment to increase capacity and to improve facilities which started in 2014.

At an event to formally open the new theatres and wards, John Duncan, the divisional clinical director said “This is a major milestone and a huge step forward in the redevelopment project.  Although the new theatres and wards have only been open a short time, we are already seeing benefits to patients. We can now locate all spinal patients together enabling us to build super specialist teams providing the very best care.“

This milestone will be followed by further building work. When this completes, there will also be four refurbished theatres, a larger neuro-oncology ward and new critical care beds.

Jon Melbourne, divisional manager said “It is brilliant to be matching the ambition of our services with new facilities that enable the provision of world class care. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved and to all of our staff and patients for coping with the disruption as the building work takes place.”

Marcel Levi, Chief Executive of UCLH said “The NHNN rightly has a global reputation for its work in neurology and neurosurgery and it is fantastic to be investing so the services can grow and develop further. We are also extremely grateful for the support of the National Brain Appeal who contributed £4 million towards the new theatres and a further £3 million towards the neuro-oncology ward. Their ongoing support makes a big difference to our ability to innovate and improve services for patients.”
